Ancient and Modern Mystics
draw from the same well of misunderstanding, their concept of humanity is a variance with the biblical concept. Their basis of 'spirituality' originates with human centeredness, finding full expression in all of the World's main religions, and the religious expressions of breakaway sects or cults.
A common fault line in mysticism is that
of Panentheism and Pantheism
Panentheism = God is in all things - In panentheism God is both personal and also in all of creation. It is a universal view that believes God is in all people and that someday all of God's creation will be saved and be one with Him.
Pantheism = God is all things - The universe, and all life are connected in a sum. This sum is the total reality of God. Thus, man, animals, plants and all physical matter are seen as equal. The assumption - all is one, therefore all is deity. We find these teachings in Platonism, Hinduism, the New Age and liberal theology.
Mystic 'knowledge' is akin to that of Gnosticism: hidden from all but the adept able to penetrate the secret path to wisdom and deification. Such knowledge contradicts the closed canon of Scripture and ignores the biblical injunction 'not to add to or take away anything written in this book'. How appropriate the teaching of the Apostle Paul to young Timothy seems upon reflection:
"O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called 'knowledge', for by professing it some have swerved from the faith." (1 Tim 6:20)
