The Person of God
God is invisible to the human eye, unless He makes Himself visible. Yet God has the attributes of personhood, so what is God like? Because He wants us to know Him personally, let's pause, and consider the attributes of God...
- God is independent of mankind - He does not need us for His existence
- God is eternally unchangeable - this means we can always trust Him to do right
- God is eternal - He existed before the World began and lives eternally
- God is omnipresent - He exists in every part of space and time, He is ever present
- God is Spirit - meaning He has no physical body, size or dimension and He does not want to be represented by any created thing
- God is omniscient - He knows everything past, present and future in every detail
- God is wise - He has chosen the best goals and the best ways to achieve them
- God is truthful - He only speaks the truth and cannot lie
- God is love - He is continually loving us and commands us to love ourselves and our neighbour as He loves us
- God is Holy - meaning that He is separated from evil and sin, He calls us to be Holy and not to participate in evil things
- God is righteous and just - He always does right and acts according to what is right, this means that God must punish sin, and that He alone can judge the sinner
- God is Jealous - He continually seeks to protect His own honour, He desires that worship be given only to Him, He want the truth to be told about Himself
- God is blessed - He takes delight in all things that reflect His character
- God is infinite - He is a most magnificent, an excellent being not subject to any of the limitations of humanity, and yet we are made in His image...
We do God a grave disservice, when we elevate one of His attributes above another, for in doing so we distort the the person of God, and create a false God of our own making, this God then becomes for us an idol, idols are repulsive to God, and He demands that they be destroyed.
God's love for example, is always tempered by His justice, His wisdom, His righteousness, His omniscience, His Holiness, and so on...
