The God of the Jews
At the very heart of Jewish & Christian theology is the doctrine of God. Both Jews and Christians worship the same God, the Infinite One to whom both Moses and Jesus prayed. He is the God "who watches over Israel and does not slumber nor sleep." (Ps. 121:4).
Christians often miss the rich context of the Jewish Scriptures out of which their teaching emerge. This is largely due to their unfamiliarity and neglect of the Old Testament (the Hebrew Scriptures).
Exod. 34:6-7a proclaims many of the attributes of God:
"The Lord, The Lord, is a gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin"
The actions and ways of God are merciful and just. Therefore, his people are to follow suit in their relationships with each other.
New Covenant believers are related positively to the Hebrew community of faith, they too are the spiritual children of Abram (Abraham). However, the terms Gentile and Christian are not Synonymous, care should be taken to illustrate the difference.
What many theologians and scholars past and present have not sufficiently stressed is that Christianity represents primarily Hebraic and not Hellenistic (Greek) roots.
"You were shown these things so that you would know that the LORD is God; there is no other besides Him -- Know there this day, and take to heart that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other." (Deut. 4:35 &39)
